Behind the Scenes of Presidential Debates
First, off, it really doesn’t get better than Charlie Rose interviewing Jim Lehrer for my money. I love these two gentlemen. But beyond, my nerd obsession, this interview was incredible because they discuss Lehrer’s book “Tension City” which is a behind the scenes of Lehrer moderating the Presidential debates.
In the interview, they discuss some of the biggest debates and...

Lessons on creativity from Steven Soderbergh →
A few super smart lessons from this interview on Charlie Rose with director Steven Soderbergh, screenwriter Scott Z. Burns and Dr. W. Ian Lipkin of Columbia University.
1) When creating something, make a list of things you DON’T want. Helps you avoid cliche’s.
2) Come prepared, but be present in the moment and be poised to adapt. Dr. Lipkin talks about how interesting...

"Broken" Washington? Or just more on broken... →
This Vanity Fair article <hyperlink in headline> ponders whether Washington is “broken” but I found one of the threads about the “disintegrating media” more interesting and got me thinking (again) about how broken journalism is too.
Todd Purdom, the reporter, cites a few things that seem to stress out the press department.
Pretty green reporters who lack historical...

The importance of role models – who are yours?
I’ve been extremely lucky to come across incredibly smart people who I’ve watched and listened to in hopes to be a bit like them one day. They helped shape who I am, helped me develop, helped me work through adversity, enabled me to keep learning, and nudged along my success. I was inspired to write this post from an article by Tom Foremski of Silicon Valley Watcher about Jon Iwata, SVP of...

Why the silence on speech recognition in Windows...
I’m lying in bed tonight trying to sleep. But there I was, 4:00 AM, wide awake thinking about how long my to-do list is and how I really need a personal assistant. Then I start planning how I can sell my husband on the idea and rationalize the cost. Then it dawned on me, if I can dictate my notes and email responses to my computer, it would be way faster than I could type and I could...

Foursquare, Events & Online Experiences
There’s a great guest post in TechCrunch Check (In) Yo’ Self Before You Wreck Yo’ Self: Why Foursquare Users Check In “Off The Grid”. Besides the funny headline, it’s a great look at why people check in ‘off the grid’ or checking in without letting your friends see where you’ve checked in. I’ve done it when I go to church or the doctor’s. I just...

flash back: press coverage measurement
Some days feel like deja vu. Just cause the 80’s have had a revival doesn’t mean measurement in PR should. I feel like I have the same conversations with clients today that I’ve had five years ago about best practices in measurement. I find it insane that there are companies that still consider press release pick-up as part of a coverage count. I also find it insane to weight...

and I'm back...oh my, apple
Thanks for giving me some time off to deal with my health issues which I can proudly claim are in remission. And now I’m back…and have stuff I can’t wait to blog about.
First up, is Apple. Its iPhone 4 launch…what a PR disaster. oh my, what can we say that hasn’t already been said? Well, if you follow the tech space, you’re aware that the latest iPhone is...

Fate and Twitter: Deeply meaningful Twitter...
Fate and Twitter? Fate’s a mighty big thing to claim and I rarely use it but that’s the only word I can use to describe this thing that happened last week. Through Twitter, I was connected to two deeply meaningful people/content. Or maybe it’s a higher power - lately things have fallen into place in ways that are just too ironic and right. So you be the judge. And be patient, the...

Blowing my Mind
This is a short post because I’m just blown away at being alive to experience how the Internet is evolving as it is. Facebook’s new integration of the ‘Like’ button across the Internet is changing the online experience as we know it. In some ways this kind of experience has been happening over time - you could start to Digg things, share out with Twitter with your friends...

Chirp » The Official Twitter Developer Conference →
I just want to say how great I think the naming, logo and presentation of Chirp is for Twitter. I don’t have any reasons to tell you why I like it except it just so neatly fits into their branding package. It feels right.
And it was a super successful event for them. Very excited for all their new endeavors and wish them the best in this big step forward for the company.

A blogger's dilemma
Some friends and I have talked about doing a broader blog on the focus of this one and one of the dilemma’s that’s come up is that we all work at agency’s and represent major tech clients. So there’s a weird line there becuase at times we’d need to write on stuff our clietns are doing becuae it’s relevant, but we’re biased. And on top of that, we’re...

Naked Conversations - Great read but outdated on...
My final thoughts on Robert Scoble’s and Shel Israel’s “Naked Conversations.” The book is well worth the read and as I noted here and here there is a ton of great content even though the book is a few years old.
My only critique comes right at the end. It’s clear, and maybe the guys thoughts on this have changed since the book came out, that they think public...
SCOTT TREPANIER: Becoming more aware of the... →
I just returned from SXSWi and it’s abundantly clear that location aware technologies such as Foursquare and Gowalla have replaced Twitter, Friendfeed and other real-time update services and the hot tech item du’jour. Indeed in the days following the show, anecdotal data tells me that Foursquare…

Comments and more
I think comments still aren’t working on this blog right. And swingaway left a response in the answers and that didn’t show up publically. Hmm. I’ll need to look into this. For now, I’ll post her response here. She commented on good crises managment:
“I think SeaWorld is one recent excellent example, specifically with the trainer who was killed by the whale. Their PR...

Blogging not always a 'go' during a crisis
I’m still reading “Naked Conversations” and I’m on the part about how staying out of the “blogosphere” or conversations on blogs about your company when there is a crisis is a huge mistake. This is true in theory, but this chapter makes a blanket approach that you must engage or else.
The problem with this is in reality, shit happens and half the time the...
Uncomfortable transparency
In reading “Naked Conversations” I just got to the end about transparency. And I felt a little bad because I haven’t been transparent with you yet. You know who I am and that I do PR and for whom and that’s all great. And you know generally what I’m into. But I also put out there that I’m taking a medical leave and didn’t say why. I feel like it’s...

Teaching clients to blog
Hello all! I’m back for a post. While I’ve been on leave, I’m FINALLY powering through “Naked Conversations” by Robert Scoble and Shel Israel. I’ve worked with Scoble in my former life at Waggener Edstrom when I did public relations for Microsoft products like MSN and Windows Live (to name a few). I’ve always found Scoble interesting because he’s the...

Journalists on Twitter - Breaking News, Politics,... →
Maybe I’m slow, but I just found this site that highlights journliasts who are on twitter and it’s AMAZING. So many ways to use this, especially from a PR perspective. I see value in this for:
understanding trends in the media,
more easily find twitter aliases for media that cover specific beats or companies,
for media you are reading/researching learn more about what they are...

I heart Vanity Fair
I finally got some time to catch up on some back issue reading in Vanity Fair. I am now current and it just reminds me why this is one of the few magazines I subscribe to. They have some of the best articles that can keep you knowledgeable on world affairs, celebrity, politics, finance, and of course, the Kennedys and New York society. A few articles worth highlighting are below.
I also, just...

This is a 3 part video series from Vice, VBS.TV called a Vice Guide to North Korea. These guys sneaked into North Korea to give people a sense of what it’s like there. The first section of the video is featured on CNN.com aptly titled, ‘A freaky, freaky trip.’ As the reporter notes in the series, the trip just get’s weirder and weirder the longer he’s there....

tumblr's Fail
tumblr’s comment functionality is a huge FAIL. tumblr has a model set up where it is utilizing a third-party, Disqus, to enable comments on tumblr sites. The problem is this: the third party commenting functionality isn’t available on all the themes. It gives you a work around where you can go into custom HTML and paste in some codes, but they may mess with your site design and not...

"Make it Work"
To give credit where credit is due, the background picture for this blog is from Season 6 of Project Runway; the dress was designed by Epperson. The designers had to make gowns out of the LA Times. I thought it was apropos - it’s a mash-up of my interest in fashion, news, design, and innovation.
Plus Project Runway is one of the best shows on TV. Season 7 has started. Who are you favorite...
tumblr is the Winner
I played around with blogspot for this blog and my good friend and brilliant PR colleague, Scott Trepanier, suggested tumblr. I’m glad he did. There are lot more themes to choose from and are much more interesting. So between the two, tumblr wins out.

The Inaugural Post
Welcome to my new blog, Plan. Pitch. Print. My name is Erika Bitzer and I decided this week that I needed to better organize my online persona. I am an open book and so my blog, Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, and more reflect all my professional passions as well as embracing all my personal thoughts and pictures and dribble. But as I think about audiences, I realize there’s an audience that may...
